Nairobi (Halbeeg News) – Kenya government has said that exportation of Khat to Somalia will resume in weeks following talks the leaders of the countries this past week.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has attended the inauguration ceremony of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud which took place this week in Mogadishu.
Speaking to the media, Kenya’s Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya said the two heads of state held talks on the sale of khat into Somalia in exchange for the sale of fish into Kenya.
According to Munya, the implementation of the exchange is awaiting official documents to be signed in two weeks’ time.
He said the bilateral Airspace Service agreement lifted the ban on passenger and cargo planes from Somalia to Nairobi.
“Diplomatic relations will too be restored. Experts from the two countries from Agriculture and Trade ministries have been in intense deliberations,” Munya said on Friday.
“I urge our farmers who had abandoned the crop to water them. The only bit remaining is paperwork and trade will return to normal like before.”
The ban imposed in March 2020 led to a loss of more than 50 tonnes of Kenyan khat a day valued at around six million shillings ($50,000).
