MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Deputy leader of Puntland state, Ahmed Elmi Osman Karaash hailed the decision of the SSC-Khatumo to break away from Puntland state.
SSC-Khatumo Supreme Council last week announced that the SSC-Khaatumo administration would no longer be part of the semi-autonomous northern Somali state of Puntland.
Karash suggested that Puntland’s dispute resolution and vetting committee select 49 MPs for the region, urging the committee not to include 17 MPs allocated for SSC-Khatumo.
“I fully welcome the decision by the SSC-Khatumo Supreme Council. I urge the committee to select only 49 MP for Puntland state and to leave SSC-Khatumo Supreme Council to decide for themselves” Karaash said.
Karaash warned against any action that could lead to political and security instability in Puntland state.
Puntland’s dispute resolution and vetting committee is expected today to release the list of lawmakers selected for the region’s assembly.
The members of the committee whose mandate will lapse today had disagreed on whether the list of SSC Khatumo members should be included in the list of the upcoming Puntland lawmakers.
Some of the members of this committee recommended members from SSC-Khatumo be excluded from the list.
The state’s leader, Said Abdullahi Deni insists that the list of the lawmakers to be 66 MPs, claiming that SSC-Katumo is part of the Puntland election process. Deni urges the committee to include SSC members in the list announcement.
The Puntland elections are scheduled for January 8, 2024.
