HARGEISA ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The political parties in Somaliland have on Sunday struck a deal to conduct parliamentary and local council elections within this year.
The leaders of the Kulmiye, Wadani, and UCID parties made the announcement in Hargeisa the capital of the self-declared state of Somaliland.
The process was postponed several times before. The current parliament came to office in 2005 and has not been replaced through elections since then.
Somaliland which enjoys relative peace unlike other parts of Somalia conducted presidential elections in November 2017 where current President Muse Bihi Abdi who was the flag bearer for Kulmiye won the majority of the votes.
The leaders from Mogadishu and Hargeisa recently met in Djibouti where they participated in talks facilitated by Djibouti.
The two sides agreed to cooperate on development issues while ceasing to politicize humanitarian projects.
Since declaring succession from greater Somalia in the early 1990s efforts to seek international recognition by Hargeisa were futile.
