BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – Southwest leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed has today formed a fact-finding committee to probe civilian killing allegations in Baidoa town.
Several people were reportedly killed in the town last month after a violent protest against the arrest of former al-Shabaab deputy leader Mukhtar, Mukhtar Robow.
In a statement, Mr. Mohamed has appointed a seven-member committee tasked to investigate the allegations.
Robow was a leading candidate, and the election was days away when he was arrested last month.
Somali officials said he hadn’t completed a defection process and had failed to renounce extremist ideology, among other allegations against him.
Deadly protests followed his arrest.
During the protest, Robow’s militias confronted Somali police forces prompting a street battle that led to the death of over ten people including regional MP.
Robow was subsequently transferred to the Somali capital, Mogadishu where he is still in custody.
