NAIROBI ( Halbeeg News)-The ambassador of Somalia to Kenya, Mohamud Ahmed Nur Tarsan has said the lifting of the arms embargo by the United Nations will help his country establish much-needed security.
Mr.Tarsan said the enemy of his country ( al-Shabaabb) has similar weapons and there is needed for advanced arsenal to overpower them and thus to happen the UN must lift the arms embargo imposed after the collapse of the Siyad Bare government in the early 1990s.
“Our soldiers need advanced weapons and training. Our soldiers have the same weapons as Al Shabaab, so how can we be effective?” Somali ambassador told The East African during an interview in his office in Nairobi.
Somali envoy believes the horn of the African country is the only country in the continent that is fighting two international terrorist groups within its borders and therefore it is not fair for the international community to continue the arms embargo on the country.
“We are not only fighting al-Shabaab but also ISIS, or Daesh. Somalia is the only African country that is fighting two international terrorist groups within its borders.”
He called upon the regional countries to support Somalia’s bid to lift the embargo.
“Somalia would like to see governments from the region, led by Kenya, campaigning in the international arena for arms embargo should be lifted.”
