NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Al-Shabaab fighters destroyed a Safaricom Telecom communication mast located in a village near Garissa town.
The incident that is said to have happened on early Sunday has disrupted communications in the area.
According to sources in the area, the fighters destroyed the mast after they attacked the village from different directions.
The residents lament that the disruption of communication would hamper an ongoing medical camp in the area.
Residents who spoke to the media said a huge explosion was heard when an unknown number of attackers exploded a device forcing officers at the nearby station to scamper for safety since they were unaware of what was happening.
Shortly after, the officers returned and a gun battle between them and the militants ensued.
A police officer in Garissa town confirmed the incident and said the mast was destroyed at a village which lies just a few killometres away from Garissa town.
He urged the local community to work with the security apparatus in the area so that security can be improved in the area.
