MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)– Al-Shabaab fighters have allegedly kidnapped school children in Bakol region.
Recently, the group has been recruiting more children to fight in their ranks in southern Somalia.
Heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters stormed El-Garas village some 40 km away from Tihyeglow district in Bakol region.
Tiyeglow district commissioner, Mohamed Abdulle Food-Adde who confirmed the incident said the group raided the village to recruit fighters.
According to Food-Adde, 60 children have been abducted from the village during the raid.
Recent months, Al-Shabaab has been ordering elders, teachers in Islamic religious schools, and communities in rural areas of South and central Somalia to provide hundreds of children or face attacks.
Last year, a Human Rights Watch report accused the group of targeting children in its listing of members.
“Al-Shabaab’s ruthless recruitment campaign is taking rural children from their parents so that they can serve this militant armed group,” Laetitia Bader, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, said in a report released in January.
“To escape that cruel fate, many children have fled school or their homes,” she added.
The report further revealed that this is not the first time, over the past decade, Al-Shabab recruited thousands of children who have been indoctrinated and deployed to various battles.
