ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Hundreds of demonstrators in Ethiopia’s in Afar regional state have blocked the main road connecting Ethiopia to Djibouti to protest over clashes near Ethiopia-Djibouti border.
The operation to transport thousands of tones of commodities from Djibouti port has been halted as the main import and export route was closed.
Protesters were demanding reconciliation and peace to end clan clashes in the area.
The road blockage is happening between the cities of Semera and Awash.
Photos posted on Social media showed several trucks queuing on the roads linking Djibouti and Ethiopia.
Ethiopian officials who spoke to the media have accused armed militias from Djibouti side to have touched villages in Ethiopia.
The officials said there were violent incidents in the past several weeks perpetrated by armed men which claimed the lives of several people and caused property destruction.
