MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least two al-Shabaab fighters after U.S. Africa Command (Africom) conducted a collective self-defence strike in central Somalia.
According to a statement by Africom, the aerial bombardment took place on Monday in a remote area near Haradheere, Somalia, approximately 396 km northeast of Mogadishu.
The mission said it will continue to assess the results of this operation and will provide additional information as appropriate. Specific details about the units involved and assets used will not be released to ensure operations security.
“The Federal Government of Somalia and U.S. Africa Command take great measures to prevent civilian casualties. Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the command’s operations to promote greater security for all Africans,” the statement reads in part.
The remarks of the US military come hours after the Somali military claimed to have killed more than 47 al-Shabaab fighters in an operation which took place near Harardhere town.
General Mohamed Tahlil Bihi, infantry commander of the SNA said the Somali military alongside the local militias backed by international partners conducted operations to hunt down al-Shabaab fighters in the Harardhere district.
The government forces seized the port town of Harardhere two weeks ago after al-Shabaab fighters vacated the town without resistance. The forces also captured Galcad and Eldhere towns.
“During two days long operations, our forces engaged in heavy fighting with al-Shabaab fighters. We killed 47 al-Shabaab fighters and we also recovered weapons and ammunition,” Bihi said.
The commander commended the support of the locals, saying the people in these areas regularly provide information about the Khawarij Al-Shabaab.
