MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali Defence ministry has vowed to intensify operations against al-Shabaab fighters in central and southern Somalia.
Somali military in collaboration with local militias has liberated a village which was previously under the control of al-Shabaab in Galgadud region.
In a statement, the ministry welcomed the recapture of Qayib village in the Galgadud region.
Ministry of Defense spokesman General Abdullahi Ali Aanod said that the village used to serve as the militant’s regional court, where the group would summon residents in Mudug and Galgadud.
“Our forces drove the enemy of al-Shabab out of Qalib today. On their way out of the village, they destroyed the local water well and the Hormuud communication tower, ” said General Aanood.
The development comes as operations against al-Shabaab started several regions of south-central Somalia including Hiiraan, Galgadud and Middle Shabelle.
Al-Shabaab still controls large swathes of territory including towns and villages. The group has been fighting the Somali government for more than a decade.
Despite losing many towns to allied forces, al-Shabaab is still capable of staging deadly attacks in major towns controlled by the Somali government.
