KISMAYO (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has confirmed death of one of co-founders al-Shabaab who was killed in an airstrike which took place in Haramka of southern Somalia.
In a statement, Somali Information Ministry said Abdullahi Nadir was eliminated in an operation with international partners which was conducted on Saturday.
Nadir aka Abdullahi Yare and Ubeyd, held various positions within al Shabab, including head of finance and media operations.
“His death is a thorn removed from the Somali nation,” the Ministry’s statement said. “The government is grateful to the Somali people and international friends whose cooperation facilitated the killing of this leader who was an enemy of the Somali nation.”
Somali government said that Nadir was a wanted leader in Al-Shabaab with a $3 million US bounty on his head.
Nadir was seen as close to the former leader of Al Shabab, Ahmed Abdi Godane, who was killed in a US air strike in 2014, and to current leader Ahmed Diriye.
Al-Shabaab group is yet to comment on the report of the death.
