Nairobi (Halbeeg News) – Kenya’s elect William Ruto has confirmed that he held talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on khat importation.
Ruto said he engaged President Hassan Sheikh for enhanced bilateral trade for the crop.
He insisted that once he takes the oath of office, the Hustler National plan to uplift the lives of Kenyans must be affected.
“Leave Miraa cartels for me. I have a meeting this week with Somalia President to fast track on Miraa markets. Miraa farmers should never be worried, I will deal with all brokers and cartels,” Ruto said.
Last year, Somalia agreed on a barter trade deal with Kenya that enables them to export fish to their neighbouring country in exchange for Khat (miraa).
The deal was part of a landmark bilateral agreement signed by President Hassan and Kenya’s outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta.
A kilogramme of miraa in Somali is now going for $23 (Sh2,730), which is still lower when compared to the $25 that it fetched before the market was closed.
Kenya is facing competition for the Somalia market from Ethiopia, which has been supplying miraa after Kenya was locked out.
