MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Hamza Abdi Barre to be the country’s next Prime Minister.
In a statement, President Mohamud has selected his long-time supporter Barre as Somalia’s 21st Prime Minister and urged Somalis to support Barre.
“The President wishes the new Prime Minister the best of luck as he leads the government’s ambitious reform plan, and he appeals to the Somali people for their unflinching support,” the statement reads in part.
President Mohamud introduced the new Prime Minister at a brief ceremony in Villa Somalia, breaking with the Somali government’s custom of making high-profile announcements late at night.
Barre was recently elected as a Jubaland MP. The new prime minister served as the head of the Jubaland Electoral Commission between 2019 and 2020.
From 2015 until 2019, Barre worked as a senior advisor for the Federal Ministry of Constitutional Affairs.
The 48-year-old appointed PM is father of eight children.
