MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least five Kenyan soldiers have been killed and three other injured after a vehicle they were travelling in hit by landmine near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Area police boss George Seda said the officers from the AP’s Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) were in a convoy escorting the Ijara Member of Parliament aspirant, Ibrahim Abbas when the attack occurred between Ijara and Sangole area.
The vehicle which was a Toyota Landcruiser, was extensively damaged.
Among the seriously injured are the driver and two of his colleagues.
Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying over 8 soldiers were killed in the attack.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in Kenya since 2011 when Kenya sent troops to Somalia to fight the group’s fighters.
