MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The government of Hungary has accepted to allow Somali students stranded in Ukraine to continue their studies in its country, the Somali foreign ministry confirmed.
In a statement, Somali foreign minister Abdsaid Muse Ali said that he had held talks on the phone with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó
“Pleasure to speak with H.E Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Hungary. Received reassurances that Somali students whose studies in Ukraine have been disrupted will be offered to continue their studies at Hungarian universities with accommodation provided,” Ali said.
According to the statement, pledged that he would closely coordinate with Minister Péter Szijjártó on the situation of Somali students and other pertinent issues.
The remarks of the minister come barely two days after the government directed its citizens in Ukraine to cross to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary or Moldova following an agreement with the four nations.
The directive follows an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine which has since claimed hundreds of lives.
Somali Foreign Ministry further noted Somali embassies in Berlin and Brussels were in ‘constant communication’ with the 280 Somali nationals in Ukraine.
