MANDERA (Halbeeg News) – Kenya government has dispatched security forces to its areas along the border with Somalia to pursue suspected al-Shabaab fighters hours after armed killed local official in Mnadera county.
Unknown gunmen on Monday targeted assistant Chief of Omar Jillacow, Mohamed Abdi Ahmed along Mandera-Arabia road.
According to Kenya police, the deceased assistant chief was riding a motorbike from Mandera on his way to Omar Jilicow when he was stopped by the gunmen.
The body of the official was taken to Mandera Referral Hospital in Mandera town.
Multi-agency forces have launched security operations to hunt the attackers who are suspected to al-Shabaab fighters.
The development comes barely a month after more 10 passengers were killed and over a dozen others wounded in bomb explosion along Arabia-Mandera Highway.
The blast occurred when a bus ferrying over 25 passengers to Mandera town ran over a bomb set on the road.
No group group had claimed the responsibility for the attack but Kenyan authorities blamed al-Shabaab for being carrying out the heinous attack.
Al-Shabaab has been attacking Kenyan towns along the border with Somalia since 2011 when Kenya sent its troops to Somalia.
The group killed hundreds of Kenyans with majority being non-locals who were working areas near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Kenya has currently more than 4000 soldiers working under African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
