MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has welcomed the country’s maritime case legal team who returned from Hague barely four days after international Courts of Justice (ICJ) sided Somalia against Kenya.
The team which included deputy prime minister Mahadi Guled, former Attorney General Dahir Ali, his successor Suleiman Mohamud among others attended the ruling of ICJ in Hague this week.
Guled and former Somali ambassador to the EU Ali Said Fiqi were Somalia’s agents in the case.
President Farmaajo received the representatives who returned from the Hague today after attending the announcement of ICJ judgement on the maritime case with Kenya Oct 12.
Last week, the UN’s top court ruled overwhelmingly in Somalia’s favour in a bitter seven-year maritime dispute against its neighbour Kenya.
The court objected Kenya’s claim of triangular territory in the Indian Ocean and instead declared Somalia was the majority owner of the piece
The court granted Somalia most of the territory that it had requested.
Kenya rejected a judgement by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Kenya- Somalia maritime border dispute.
Oil and gas speculators believe that the 62,000 square mile area is potentially rich in hydrocarbons.
