GURIEL ( Halbeeg News) – Somali National Army has taken control of Guriel town in Galgadud following the vacation of Ahlu Suna forces on Sunday.
The troops seized police and other security stations after Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a militias vacated overnight.
Similar action was witnessed in Matan in Hiran region which was previously a stronghold of the Sufi group but vacated after Somalia’s Interior and Federal Minister, Abdi Mohamed Sabriye along with troops arrived in the town.
ASWJ militias retreated following a brief encounter with the army.
The religious group leadership in Galmudug administrative capital has turned down a previous agreement with the federal government earlier this year accusing the national leaders of betraying the contract.
Part of the agreement which was implemented has seen hundreds of former militias trained and integrated into the Somali armed forces.
Interior Minister, Abdi Mohamed Sabriye has called upon the group to respect the agreement reached between the two sides to foster peace and security in the Galmudug region ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
