MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – United Nations has warned its staff to restrict their movement within and outside Halena Base Camp after several shells landed inside the camp on Sunday.
In a statement, the UN said the security of the base is on high alert to avert further imminent attack on the base.
UN staff were directed to minimize their movement inside the base until further notice.
The alert comes less than 24 hours after the mortar shell attacks hit Halena in Mogadishu.
The UN condemned the mortar shells targeted at its compounds Sunday afternoon terming a ‘blatant act of terrorism.’
UN Special Representative to Somalia James Swan said in a statement the attacks on UN and AMISOM compounds were ‘appalling’.
“I am appalled by this blatant act of terrorism against our personnel, who work together with the Somali people on humanitarian, peace building, and development issues,” said Swan.
The UN top official in Somalia also confirmed staff at the compounds were injured but did not specify the number. He, however, noted ‘several people’ were injured.
