MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Somali Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheyre laid the foundation stone for the construction of the National Blood Bank Facility in Mogadishu on Sunday.
Somalia did not have a functioning national blood bank for close to three decades.
The facility which was absent for close to three decades will, upon completion, go along the way in covering shortage of blood in the country and is expected to store up to 10,000 units of blood in first phase.
The launch of this project coincides with the second anniversary after the deadly 14 October 2017 truck bomb attack in Mogadishu in which more 500 people were killed and scores others wounded.
Speaking during the launch of the construction project, Somali premier, Hassan Ali Kheyre said the national blood bank facility will play key role in reducing bleeding related deaths.
” Establishing a blood bank, therefore, becomes more urgent given our context, as it mitigates deaths because of bleeding. Providing reliable blood transfusion services will be fundamental to our health sector reform.” the PM said.
The premier added that his government is very committed to enhancing the delivery of essential services to the Somali people through the implementation of responsive and proactive policy initiatives, through collaboration with development partners.
