GALKACYO (Halbeeg News)-The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday condemned the brutal murder of 12-year-old girl Aisha Ilyes Aden after being kidnapped, raped and tortured in the north-central Somali town of Galkayo in Puntland State.
United Nations (UN) has condemned the killing of a girl who raped before murdered in Galkayo town in central Somalia.
Aisha Ilyes Aden, a 12-year old was kidnapped and allegedly raped and brutally tortured this week in the north of Galkayo town in Mudug on the side of Puntland state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) termed the heinous against the girl as a brutal act.
“The violence reflects and reinforces the discrimination against women and girls, perpetuating a vicious cycle that is detrimental to their development and progress,” the UN agency said in a statement.
The agency said, “Gender-based violence is a grave violation of individual women’s and girls’ rights; the rape and subsequent murder of Aisha is a terrible example of that. Moreover, the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators, and the fear generated by their actions, have an effect on all women and girls.”
UNFPA called for a speedy investigation into Aisha’s murder and for the enforcement of the Sexual Offenses Bill, which criminalises all sexual offences in the Puntland State of Somalia.
“UNFPA stands with Aisha’s family and fully supports the authorities, communities and activists fighting against gender-based violence and for women’s human rights in Somalia,” UNFPA said.
