MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has on Thursday met with Swedish ambassador to Somalia in Mogadishu.
Ambassador Andreas von Uexküll and the president discussed the relations between the country and their cooperation on several issues including support and trade.
The leaders also discussed a new strategy by Sweden which will focus on building resilience in Somali society.
During the meeting, Ambassador Andreas lauded Somali government’s efforts to rebuild the country and stabilization process.
He underlined his government commitment to support Somali government saying it aims to contribute to Somalia’s ongoing peace and state-building processes.
On his part, Somali president Farmajo has appreciated the Swedish government for its role to help Somalia.
President Farmajo has encouraged the ambassador to work on enhancing the relations between the countries.
Last year, the Swedish government has adopted a new strategy for development cooperation with Somalia.
Sweden announced that its support to Somalia will amount to SEK3 billion (US$334 million) for the period 2018-2022.
During the annual high-level Somalia Partnership Forum held in Brussels in July last, ambassador Andreas said Sweden’s new strategy still focuses on the poorest and most vulnerable people in society, in particular women, girls, and young people.
“Now it is a matter of continuing to develop federal governance, reviewing the constitution and preparing and holding general elections in 2020/2021. The country also needs to lay the foundation for socio-economic development and increase state revenue,” he said.
