MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The U.N. Security Council has expressed regret at the expulsion of U.N. envoy by Somali government over his remarks on the arrest of Former deputy leader of al -Shabaab.
Nicholas Haysom who took office three months ago had late last month addressed a letter to the country’s security ministry questioning the detention and subsequent transfer of Mukhtar Robow.
Following a closed-door discussion about Somalia’s move to expel Haysom, the council conveyed gratitude to the longtime U.N. official who declared persona non-grata by the Horn of the African nation.
Despite the concerns, the council pledged full cooperation between Somalia and the United Nations.
The development comes barely a day after UN Secretary-General announced UN’s plan to replace Haysom with new envoy as Somali leaders insisted their decision to declare the former envoy persona non-granta.
Somali ministry for Foreign Affairs accused Haysom of interfering in the internal matters and undermining the sovereignty of the nation.
