NEW YORK(Halbeeg)- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the attack on United Nation’s compound in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia on Tuesday. He describes it as ‘intentional’ the attack carried out against UN personnel may comprise a violation of international humanitarian law.
The Secretary-General underlined the attacks, and the acts of violations will not lessen the support of UN to Somali people.
“Such acts will not diminish the strong resolve of the United Nations to continue supporting the people and Government of Somalia in their efforts to build peace and stability in the country, ” he said.
The secretary general, Mr Guterres urged the federal government of Somalia to conduct an investigation on the attacks against UN compound and bring the assailants and those responsible to justice.
“Investigate the attacks and swiftly bring those responsible to justice, ” Guterres said.
He wished the injured UN personnel a speedy recovery. Two UN staff and a contractor sustained injuries during the attack as confirmed by the expelled UN envoy to Somalia, Nicholas Haysom.
The statement indicated that all the injuries are not life-threatening.
Deploring the “unwarranted act of aggression against our personnel,” Mr. Haysom stressed that “no political agenda can be served through violence that deliberately targets staff members of international organisations who are supporting the consolidation of peace and the strengthening of governing institutions in Somalia.”
The Federal government of Somalia has expelled the special envoy of UN secretary general, Nicholas Haysom from the country.
A press statement released by the ministry of foreign affairs and International Cooperation has blamed ambassador Haysom of violating the international diplomatic norms and thus should immediately leave the country.
The statement further accused the UN envoy of interfering in the internal affairs of government of Somalia.
Al-Shabaab has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
