BAIDOA(HALBEEG)-The long-awaited Southwest state presidential elections are set to start today. The presidential candidates addressed the regional parliament on Tuesday.
The security of Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of Southwest, was heightened by joint Somali security forces and AMISOM peacekeeping troops who are patrolling the main streets of the town.
Major roads entering the city was shut down for security purpose as well.
Five candidates are contesting for the crucial election, most of the aspirants served senior positions in the federal government of Somalia.
A delegation led by Interior minister of Federal Government, Abdi Mohamed Sabriye is expected to oversee the election process of Southwest.
International observers mainly from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) are also set to arrive in Baidoa today.
The election was postponed severally due to technical and security issues.
