DODOMA (Halbeeg News) – Tanzanian police have arrested a Somali man suspected to have been involved in the transportation of 30 illegal immigrants to Dar es Salaam via RATCO Bus Company.
Yahya Mohamed and his two Tanzanian accomplices were in operations against human trafficking as they were trying to transport undocumented migrants to Tanzania’s second largest city.
Tanga Regional Police Commander (RPC), SACP Edward Bukombe who spoke to the media on Saturday said the suspects in Tanga town following a crackdown against human trafficking and illegal immigrants.
According to Bukombe, the suspects were nabbed by police on the 25th and 26th of October from different parts of Tanga town.
He further said that the police set an ambush after receiving reliable information from good Samaritans who tipped them that illegal immigrants were about to be transported to Dar es Salaam
The police also detained other illegal immigrants arrested on 20th October at RATCO bus office in Mkwakwani street ready for the journey to Dar es Salaam, according to Tanzanian Daily News.
The arrest comes barely three weeks after 17 Somali migrants were deported from Tanzania following months of confinement in detention centers.
With help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Somalis were returned to Mogadishu a week after Tanzanian police round them up as they embarked on an unsuccessful journey to South Africa.
The UN agency said the latest intervention was made under the auspices of the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in the Horn of Africa
“The latest return will bring the number of Somalis assisted by IOM under the EU-IOM Joint Initiative to 82 since March 2017,” said the UN migration agency.
