JIGJIGA(Halbeeg News)- The newly appointed president of Ethiopia’s Somali region, Mustaf Muhumed Omer has for the first time talked about proposed plans to change the name of the state and reinstate the previous flag.
Giving exclusive interview to VOA Somali service, Mustaf said the flag and the former name of the state will be restored in line with the constitution of the state.
“We [ the new administration] would like to return the name of the state as it use before, we are famous people, it is not to explain who we are” Said the new president.
“The first name agreed upon by [everyone] during the establishment of state was Somali state, in my view, I don’t see the reason why we opt for other names” he added.
The new president, Mustaf stressed that it is important for the people Somali region to get a flag that show the unity of Somali people since Somalis share a lot of things but are under different administrations.
The flag was designed when the previous president of the State, Abdullahi Hassan, was dismissed and the new administration of Daud Mohammed Ali (Daa’uud Maxamed Cali) was installed by the government led by Males Zanawi.
The previous flag was a green-white-dark red horizontal tricolour with a light blue triangle at the hoist charged by a white star.
After Ethiopian-Somali People’s Democratic Party (ESPDP)’s executive committee appointed Mustafa Muhumed Omer to be new president of Ethio-Somali region state on Wednesday, he immediately proposed to change the name and the flag of the state as his first action plan after taking office.
