Kismayo (Halbeeg) – An Al-Shabaab Foreign commander was killed on Sunday after Somali forces conducted covert operations in Lower Jubba region.
Somali National Army (SNA) troops recaptured several villages from Al-Shabaab fighters since last month as the operations against the group intensified.
Abdi Ibrahim Ali, the commander of the 11th platoon of SNA’s 58th battalion confirmed the killing of the foreigner saying the government killed a Tanzanian fighter near Bundada-Arare village.
The commander noted the foreigner along with six other Al-Shabaab fighters.
” Somali Army killed seven Alshabab fighters in a covert operation conducted on Sunday. Among those killed in the operations is a Tanzanian commander,” Ali said.
He did not specify how the Foreigner’s nationality was identified.
The operations came barely hour Somali Military recaptured Bundada-Arare village from Al-Shabaab.
The forces seized the villages without resistance from Al-Shabaab.
Last week, Jubbaland authorities and AMISOM officials jointly agreed to rump up operations against Al-Shabaab in Jubbaland regions.
Al-Shabab which wants to overthrow Somali government has been fighting SNA and AMISOM forces since 2007 when AU deployed its troops in Somalia.
Despite losing many major towns to Somali government forces, the group controlled a large swath of remote areas.
Al-Shabab carries out hit and run attacks on military bases in South and central Somalia.
