BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – The death toll from twin bomb blasts in Baidoa has risen to 17 from the initially reported 6, a senior government official said on Sunday.
The first blast occurred when a man wearing an explosive device walked into Beder restaurant and blew himself up.
Shortly after the first blast, another suicide bomber blew himself up at the Bilan hotel.
The targetted hotel was belonging to a former Somali minister, Mohamed Aden Fargeti who is a candidate running for Southwest presidential elections.
The South West State information minister, Ugas Hassan Abdi the two blasts claimed over 15 people majority being civilians.
“The attacks were carried out by two suicide bombers wearing explosive belts. 16 people were killed in both blasts, ” Mr. Abdi.
Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the twin blasts in Baidoa town is a key economic center about 250 kilometers (155 miles) west of the capital, Mogadishu.
The group which had been controlling town for four years was driven out by Somali forces supported by Ethiopian troops.
