MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheire on Thursday suspended the country’s deputy foreign Minister over alleged corruption.
Last week Somali Attorney General, Ahmed Ali Dahir accused Mukhtar Mahad Daud who is deputy foreign Minister, of stealing Public funds.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Somali Information Minister Dahir Mohamud Gelle said PM Kheire ordered Mr. Daud to step aside pending investigation into corruption allegations levelled against Mr. Daud.
“Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire suspended the deputy Foreign minister, Mukhtar Mahad Daud,” the post reads in part.
The move comes barely two days after the Foreign Ministry denied accusations against Mr. Daud.
In a statement, the Ministry termed the allegations against Mr. Daud as “far from the truth” and “slander”.
The ministry condemned the raid on the office of the deputy minister by the police officers.
“Anti-terror police unit had stormed the building of the ministry and The ministry sees that (the raid) as an act to destroying the trust and cooperation that were initially,” the statement reads in part.
Meanwhile, the new anti-corruption measures are parts of a package of social and economic reforms by the Somali government, seeking to eradicate the corruption.
The government seeks to introduce more oversight of corruption with public workers have been ordered to report corruption cases to the anti-corruption agency which the government said was established in a bid to improve the functions of its institutions.
Somalia is often ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world by international watchdogs.
