BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – At least five African Union soldiers have been killed and two injured in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack in Bay region.
Hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers operating under the framework of African Union are backing Somali forces in the fight against Al-Shabaab in Bay and Bakool regions.
The soldiers from Ethiopian contingent died on Monday evening after their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED).
According to local residents, the landmine destroyed the vehicle.
The attack took place along Baidoa-Bardale highway.
Al-Shabaab in a statement posted on its affiliate media claimed the responsibility for the attack.
The group said its fighters killed five Ethiopian soldiers in a landmine attack.
AMISOM and Ethiopian commanders did not comment on the attack on the troops.
