MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least eighty al-Shabaab have been killed and dozens wounded after clashes with the Somali National Army in central Somalia.
According to a statement by the infantry commander Somali National Army, Gen. Dayah Abdi Abdulle, the government forces launched operations against al-Shabaab fighters in areas south of the Mudug region.
Abdulle confirmed that the forces destroyed al-Shabaab bases in Aad villages and recovered weapons.
The government also stormed Jehjeh village, prompting eight hours of long fighting between the Somali military and fighters.
“During these operations, the government forces succeeded in killing 80 al-Shabaab fighters and liberated Aad town. The operations against al-Shabaab will be continuous until liberated areas under al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia,” the commander said.
The development comes barely a day after the Somali government claimed to have killed at least 130 al-Shabaab fighters during simultaneous military operations in central and southern Somalia.
According to a statement by the country’s Defense Ministry, the government forces liberated large swaths of areas from the al-Shabaab group in the past three days.
The army also reportedly seized weapons and equipment from al-Shabaab hideouts, which were destroyed during military operations.
The Somali government backed by troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) has been fighting al-Shabaab fighters in south and central Somalia for more than decades.
The government succeeded in liberating dozens of major towns including the capital.
