MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least fifty-five al-Shabaab fighters were killed, and dozens wounded after Somali forces backed by international partners launched operations against al-Shabaab in central Somalia.
According to SNA chief, Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuyidin Adow who spoke to the state-owned media, the operations took place in Jehjeeh, Aad and Adaley villages in Mududg region.
Among those killed are said to be senior al-Shabaab commanders.
The development comes barely a day after the government confirmed the death of at least 10 Al-Shabaab fighters in a second airstrike in southern Somalia.
The airstrike, state media reports, disrupted a key Al-Shabaab meeting that was going on, killing another senior leader in the process. Both the US army and the government of Somalia are yet to reveal the name of the leader killed.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with al-Shabaab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.
Since at least 2007, al-Shabaab has waged a deadly campaign against the Somali government and international forces that has claimed thousands of lives.
Somali forces backed by troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) have been fighting al-Shabaab for more than a decade.
The allied forces succeeded in taking control of major towns in the south and central.
