MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has killed at least ten al-Shabaab fighters in a joint operation carried out by Somali forces and US military drones in southern Somalia.
According to a statement by Somali Ministry of Information statement, the joint operation, the Somali National Army (SNA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) took place the Middle Jubba region of Somalia this week.
The allied forces successfully neutralized 10 Al-Shabab terrorists attempting to amass fighters near the border between Lower and Middle Jubba regions of Jubbaland State.
The development comes barely three days after a high-ranking al-Shabaab commander was killed in the south of the country.
Somali Information Minister Daud Aweis said in a post that the operation “aimed to neutralize the terrorist leader in charge for orchestrating terror attacks.
The Somali government said the strike occurred in the Middle Jubba region. The commander has not been identified.
The last time a U.S. airstrike targeted a senior al-Shabaab commander was in May when the head of the radical militant group’s external operations, Moalim Osman, was injured in the strike.
Osman is accused of overseeing the recruitment of foreign fighters to Somalia to help with al-Shabab’s ongoing battle against the Somali government.
