HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – Deadly brief fighting erupted in Hargeisa after armed local fighters stormed Somaliland military soldiers based in the Naso-Hablod Mountains, resulting in at least five fatalities and other injuries.
According to a local councillor, Yasin Omar Yare, the assailants who are suspected to be organized local fighters in the area were furious about a piece of land given to the military based in the Naso-Hablod Mountains.
The locals protested severally over the deployment of military contingents in the area located in the northeast of Hargeisa.
These deaths are the result of a land dispute that has recently escalated in the area. The contested land is owned by the local government and is a matter of public interest,” the councillor said. “Despite our best efforts to quietly resolve the dispute between the military troops and the locals, things did not turn out as planned.”
Somaliland, a region in northern Somalia had declared to have seceded from Somalia in 1990 after the fall of the government led by the late Mohamed Siad Barre.
The region which succeeded in restoring peace has held parliamentary and presidential elections. However the region failed to gain international recognition.
