MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government confirmed on Tuesday that an Al-Shabaab operative defected and surrendered to Somali forces in southern Somalia.
In a statement, Somali Defense Ministry said Abdirihman Adan Fanale had surrendered on on Monday in Hudur town.
“Abdirihman Adan Fanale, a member of Khawarij surrendered to security forces in Hudur, Bakool. The move highlights the growing pressure on AS from both government forces & the united Somali people. More militants are seeking ways to disassociate from the group & save themselves,” the ministry said.
The development comes barely a month after Abdullahi Mohamed Nor, the director of the National Center for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism confirmed that 107 Al-Shabaab fighters surrendered to the government between July and August in four states: Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Southwest, and Jubaland.
The Somali government under President Hassan Sheikh has issued an amnesty program for al-Shabaab fighters who have defected.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with al-Shabaab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.
Since at least 2007, al-Shabaab has waged a deadly campaign against the Somali government and international forces that has claimed thousands of lives.
