DHUSAMAREEB (Halbeeg News) – Al-Shabaab fired mortar shells at a newly liberated town in central Somalia Somalia, SNA officials and eyewitnesses reported as the operations against the group intensified in south and central Somalia.
Witnesses said several mortar shells landed in El-Lahelay town on Monday night, but no casualties were reported.
Somali National Army (SNA) officials who spoke to VOA Somali service confirmed that the attack did not cause any damage in the area.
The Al-Shabaab group, which claimed the attack, said it targeted government forces in the town. Al-Shabaab did not provide further details.
Somali government and Galmudug state have not yet commented on the attack claimed by Al-Shabaab.
The attack comes barely a day after SNA claimed that its forces killed 43 al-Shabaab fighters and injured several others after conducting an operation in Galgaduud region, central Somalia.
SNA also claimed that it forces also destroyed three battle wagon vehicles belonging to the group during the operation.
The operation comes as the Somali government intensified its efforts to mobilize people to fight al-Shabaab, a move it said seeks to galvanize public support in the ongoing offensive operation.
