MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least four al-Shabaab fighters were killed and dozens of others wounded in a joint operation against al-Shabaab in central Somalia.
Somali defence minister, Abdullahi Anod who spoke to the media said the country’s armed forces backed local clan militias engaged in deadly clashes with al-Shabaab fighters on Saturday in Budbud village.
“Our forces and the community forces succeeded in liberating Budbud village, a strategic village in the Galgadud region. Several al-Shabaab fighters were killed and others including senior al-Shabaab leaders were wounded,” the spokesperson said.
Gen. Anod vowed that the joint forces will continue operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia until all areas under al-Shabaab control are liberated.
“The second phase of the operations against al-Shabaab commenced and we are committed to eradicating al-Shabaab fighters from these regions,” he said.
Somali launched the second phase of military offensives against al-Shabaab two weeks ago in the Hiiraan region.
Several villages have been liberated following deadly clashes with al-Shabaab fighters in the region.
