MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Regional lawmakers will elect a new leader for the Southwest state of Somalia in 2024, a new agreement between Southwest state authorities and opposition confirmed.
Following weeks-long negotiation talks brokered by the federal government, the southwest reconciliation ad hoc committee said elders who will be drawn from the regional state will be selecting members of the state’s lawmakers late this year.
The reconciliation conference which was participated by the rival political groups in the state was concluded last night with remarks of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who called on the sides to work on the implementation of the agreement.
The committee said the selection of the lawmakers will run between November and December 2023 while the election of the election will take place in January next year.
Late last year, armed clashes erupted in Baidoa town after the state’s security forces allegedly stormed residential homes of political figures who oppose the Southwest administration following a one-year extension approved for the current state leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Lafta-gareen by the lawmakers based in Baido town.
The clashes claimed the lives of several people including civilians. Several others were also wounded in the confrontation.
President Mohamud who issued a day later after the clashes had called on the sides to iron out their differences at the negotiating table.
The Lower House speaker, Adan Madobe, who hails from Southwest state had commenced efforts to broker talks between the rival political groups in Baidoa town. The reconciliation spearheaded by the speaker began in November 2022 as he appointed a seven-member committee to steer the reconciliation.
