MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces backed by local clan militias have attacked an al-Shabaab-controlled village in central Somalia.
According to a statement by the Somali military, the allied forces engaged in fierce fighting with al-Shabaab fighters.
The operation against al-Shabab took place in Behano village which lies about 15km from Beledweyne town of Hiiraan region.
Somali military claimed to have killed more than al-Shabaab fighters in the operation.
Beledweyne town lies about 245km away from Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.
Somali forces backed by local militias have recently stepped up operations against al-Shabaab in central Somalia.
Since last July when the operations against al-Shabaab, the government forces liberated dozens of villages and towns in Hiiraan, Galgadud, Mudug and Middle Shabelle regions.
The government claimed to have killed more than 2,000 al-Shabaab fighters since the operations commenced.
Despite losing many towns and villages, Al-Shabaab is still capable of conducting attacks in major towns.
