Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – Al-Shabaab operative has surrendered himself to the Somali government in the southwest of the country.
In a statement, the Somali military said Aden Isaq Hassan who has been an al-Shabaab fighter for three years has turned in himself to the government forces in Baidoa town.
Hassan had been in charge of a guerrilla unit and operated in the Bay, Bakol, and Middle Jubba regions.
The defection of Hassan to the Somali government comes amid Somali government forces backed by clan militias intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia.
The allied forces also claimed to have killed more than 2000 fighters in close to eight months of operations.
The forces also recaptured dozens of villages and towns in the Hiiraan, Galgadud and Middle Shabelle regions.
Despite losing many territories to the Somali military, al-Shabaab is still capable of carrying out deadly bombings and attacks in major towns controlled by the Somali government. The group also attacks military bases outside the capital, Mogadishu.
