NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Kenya security forces have killed at least 12 al-Shabaab fighters following heavy clashes with the group in an area near the country’s border with Somalia.
In a statement, Kenya police said a multi-agency security team raided an Al-Shabaab camp in Sedahgose of Garissa County.
The camp was hosting about al-Shabaab fighters. The forces also captured one fighter alive.
According to the statement, the forces also recaptured an IED, one PKM machine gun, and 1 AK47.
The development comes days after the government of Kenya deployed hundreds of soldiers to enhance the security of towns and villages near its border with Somalia.
Kenya has thousands of soldiers working under the framework of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis).
The East African nation first deployed its soldiers to fight al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia in 2011 following allegations that the group abducted dozens of tourists from Kenyan coastal regions.
