MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Al-Shabaab fighters launched four bomb attacks near the Banaadir Regional Administration headquarters Sunday afternoon amid reports that the group’s fighters managed to enter the building.
According to multiple sources, the bombings went around the Mogadishu Mall located in the same areas with the BRA headquarters. Al-Shabaab said its fighters entered the BRA compound but there was no immediate confirmation.
Gunfire and heavy fighting can still be heard in the area as government forces engage the fighters. The attack comes in the wake of a series of Al-Shabaab attacks against government forces in Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions.
The group attacked a Somali army base in Hawadley, Middle Shabelle region on Friday and claimed to have killed 60 soldiers. But AFRICOM said it killed 30 Al-Shabaab fighters in an airstrike following the attack on the base.
Al-Shabaab killed Mogadishu Mayor Abdirahman Yarisow on July 2019 after a female staff alleged to have been working for the group blew up during a staff meeting. Several other senior BRA officials were killed during the attack.
