NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – At least 10 al-Shabaab fighters killed and several injured after clashes with Kenyan security forces near the country’s border with Somalia.
According to a police statement, the clashes between Kenyan forces and al-Shabaab fighters took place on Wednesday in Degbon of Garissa county.
Northeastern Regional Police Commander George Seda said the multi-agency security team conducted an intelligence-led operation on the Al-Shabab hideout at Degbon after trailing the extremists for a week.
“The multi-agency team also recovered weapons including rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), AK-47 rifles, and improvised explosive device materials,” Seda said in a security report.
He said the killing of the extremists followed a tip-off from residents, adding that the operation was ongoing and would not divulge much.
The development comes barely a day after al-Shabaab fighters killed one person and wounded five including Kenya Defence Forces soldiers in an attack along the Lamu – Ijara- Garissa road.
The victims were construction workers on Lapsset road. The injured were later evacuated and flown to the hospital, police said.
Police said the attack took place at about 8am Tuesday marking the second such incident in a week.
According to police, the incident happened about seven kilometres from Bodhai Police Station/GSU camp in Garissa County as the group headed to their work stations from a Chinese camp where they reside.
A fuel tanker was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) from the front, killing one occupant on the spot.
