MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has said its forces supported its international partners killed more than 30 al-Shabaab fighters in security operations which took place in the Middle Shabelle region.
In a statement, Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said the operations were conducted by the forces in the west of Obale village near Mahaday town.
The agency also said the forces destroyed the al-Shabaab base and recovered weapons during the operations.
Somali forces backed by clan militias have recently intensified operations to liberate all al-Shabaab-controlled areas in Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan and Galgaduud regions.
According to the Somali Information Ministry, the allied forces killed hundreds of al-Shabaab fighters since last July when the offensives against the group commenced.
Several other towns and villages including Adan Yabaal town were liberated. The government with help of its international partners conducted aerial bombardment against al-Shabaab bases.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate group has been fighting the Somali government for 15 years. During this time, the group lost towns and villages including the capital to the government forces.
Despite losing territories to the government forces and African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) troops, the group still carries out deadly attacks in Mogadishu and other major towns in the country.
