Both leaders underlined the importance to enhance the cooperation between the two countries.
“His Excellency, the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Today, a phone call was made with his brother, His Highness, the Emir of the State of Qatar Tamim Bin Hamad, to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them” the statement reads in part.
On 16th October, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar appointed Dr. Abdullah Salem Nasser Al Holi Al Nuaimi as the new Qatari Ambassador to Somalia.
Abdullah replaces Hassan Bin Hamsa Hashim who served the office for years.
Somalia and Qatar developed close ties since the horn of the African nation’s neutral stance on the gulf diplomatic crisis in June 2017 when Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt imposed land, sea and air sanctions on the tiny nation.
The Qatari government has donated dozens of military vehicles to the Somali military in a bid to intensify efforts to restore peace in Somalia.
The Gulf country also helped the Horn of Africa nation build roads connecting the capital to Afgoye town which is in the Lower Shabelle region.
