MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s elite forces have destroyed al-Shabab hideouts during the covert security operations in southern Somalia.
In a statement, Somali army said its Danab commandos attacked al-Shabaab bases in Toratorow and Aliow-Borow areas in Lower Shabelle region, prompting hours long fighting with the group’s fighters.
The operations conducted by the 16th Danab Commando Unit managed to arrest at least six al-Shabaab fighters.
More five other fighters were also eliminated during the clashes with Somali forces.
Somali forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab this week after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ordered for the increase of attacks against al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting Somali government forces backed by African Union Transitional Mission In Somalia (Atmis) troops for the past decade.
The group lost many towns including the capital, to the allied forces.
