MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The members of Somalia’s Lower House have last night elected Sheikh Adan Madobe as the speaker of the house in a heavily contested election held in Mogadishu.
The elections was took were initially forced to be delayed for hours had run into round after almost seven candidates vying for the seat failed to secure the requisite votes to win.
The first round of the election of the speaker of the parliament was concluded with Hasan Abdinur emerging as the leading candidate with 98 votes followed by Sheikh Adan Madobe who got 74 votes.
Five other candidates eyeing the speakers had received a total of 80 votes, leading the top two candidates to move on to a run-off election. 240 MPs are eligible to cast a ballot.
In the second round, the lawmakers in Somalia’s lower house of parliament chose Sheikh Adan Madobe as its new speaker with 163 votes while his challenger, Hassan Abdinur 89 votes.
Madobe previously served as speaker of parliament from Jan. 31, 2007 to May 25, 2010.
