Hargeisa (Halbeeg News) – Qatari government has pledged to contribute to the rebuilding of Waheen Market which was destroyed by massive fire early this month.
A delegation led by Qatari Ambassador to Somalia on Sunday visited Hargeisa town to assess the situation of the market.
Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdullahi Ismail (Saylici) had welcomed Amb. Hassan Bin Hamza Hashem and other Qatri officials.
The ambassador was accompanied by Fahad Al-Dehemi, Qatar’s International Aid Officer, Joseph Al-Mulla, Qatar’s Humanitarian Aid Researcher, and Ali Abdullah Al-Dabbagh.
During a meeting with Somaliland officials, amb Hassan confirmed his government’s commitment to support Somaliland in rebuilding the market.
Early this month, huge fire destroyed Hargeisa’s main market, Waheen.
The market, which is the city’s largest open-air market, was a busy place, with hundreds of small vendors and businesses.
The vast market is a crowded warren of shops and makeshift stalls, with no proper streets, only narrow pathways.
The tragedy struck when the region is suffering one of the worst droughts in decades, recording the driest season in 40 years.
Meanwhile, Amb Hassan Bin Hamza participated an event to distribute food aid to 750 needy families in Hargeisa town.
