MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least 20 al-Shabaab fighters have been killed in a security operation conducted by the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) hours after heavily armed al-Shabaab combatants stormed numbers of police stations in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
According to reliable sources, the African Union troops destroyed a vehicle belonging to Al-Shabaab in an area in Lower Shabelle region.
Amisom operation comes hours after a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), detonated at the Kahda Police station.
Two other Police stations in Elasha-Biyaha and El-Janaale were also attacked.
A car bomb also detonated in the Darussalam neighbourhood in the Yaqshid district, while mortars were shelled at targeted communities in Daynile, Hodan, Shibis and Shangaani districts.
The attacks killed five people were killed in simultaneous attacks on Somali police stations in Mogadishu.
Among the victims killed in the attacks were two children.
The attacks were condemned by Amisom in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“The latest attack by Al-Shabaab demonstrates its wanton disregard for human lives and property at a time that Somalia is showing an unwavering commitment to rebuilding the country. The African Union remains resolute in supporting Somalia to defeat terrorism which is destructive to economic, cultural, political and social life,” said the Ag. Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Fiona Lortan.
